Finidi George, under intense pressure following Nigeria's stuttering World Cup qualifying campaign, has spoken out about the challenges he's faced in his opening weeks as manager.
He claims to have received minimal backing from his employers, the NFF, and doesn't shy away from criticizing the players' dedication to the national team. These comments came during a meeting in Abuja with NFF officials and Sports Minister John Enoh, held to review the Super Eagles' precarious 2026 World Cup qualification bid.
Following a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo, a shocking 2-1 defeat to Benin in Abidjan left Nigeria's qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
According to a source, Finidi used Nigerian footballing icon Victor Osimhen as an example to highlight a lack of commitment from the country's top stars. Osimhen's official explanation for missing these crucial qualifiers was a four-week injury layoff.
"Finidi believes Osimhen could have still played in these matches," our source revealed.
"The coach went on to say that it seems Osimhen picks and chooses which games he plays for Nigeria, and he shouldn't have to beg players to represent their country."
The former Enyimba manager also lamented a complete breakdown of discipline within the squad. He expressed deep disappointment with the players' casual approach to training camp during these critical qualifiers.
Finidi alleges that some players enjoy the backing of powerful NFF board members, making it difficult to enforce discipline. He claims to have been warned on multiple occasions that certain players are "protected" by these influential figures.
