The Super Falcons' Olympic odyssey got off to a disappointing start as they were narrowly defeated by Brazil in their Group C curtain-raiser.
Despite a promising opening period, the Nigerians were unable to capitalise on their opportunities, and a solitary first-half strike proved decisive for the South American outfit.
Having surged into the competition on the crest of a wave following a commendable World Cup campaign, the Super Falcons were expected to make a forceful statement. However, they were met with a stern examination from a Brazilian side renowned for their technical flair.
Nigeria enjoyed early territorial dominance and carved out several promising openings, but a combination of inspired goalkeeping and wayward finishing prevented them from breaking the deadlock.
Against the run of play, Brazil snatched the lead shortly before the interval, leaving the African champions with a mountain to climb.
The second half witnessed a determined Nigerian rearguard action as they sought an equaliser. Yet, despite throwing caution to the wind, they were unable to breach the resilient Brazilian defence.
The final whistle confirmed a frustrating defeat that leaves the Super Falcons with a challenging task to progress to the knockout stages.
Their next test comes against the formidable Spanish on 28 July, followed by a clash with Japan on 31 July. Meanwhile in other match played in Nigeria's Group C, Spain secured 2-1 winning start with a victory over Japan.
