Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has expressed his concern over the decision of some politicians in Adamawa State to orchestrate a boycott of the forthcoming local government elections.
He stated that such actions could be detrimental to democracy and hinder its development in the state.
He disclosed that the forthcoming local government (LG) elections will be the third in his fifth year as Governor of Adamawa State. He noted that in the previous elections, opposition parties won, and nothing stopped them from being sworn in to their respective elected positions. Hinted of conducting credible elections in the State.
Governor Fintiri made these lamentations while campaigning for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) local government chairmen and councillors in Numan and Demsa Local Government Areas.
Recalled that the All Progressive Congress (APC) vowed not to participate in the forthcoming election in the state, alleging that the PDP has hijack the electiral umpire in the state. However, 18 political parties have registered with the state z Independent Electoral Commission to contest in the LG elections.
Speaking at Makwada Square and the Local Government Pavilion in Numan and Demsa respectively, Governor Fintiri said a true democrat should not discourage others from participating in an election. Instead, they should sponsor candidates to make them future leaders.
He noted that good leaders are discovered and elected from the grassroots to higher positions at the state and national levels.
He assured that the next local government executives elected under the platform of the PDP will perform better than the previous executives.
He disclosed that the PDP's selection of women as vice-chairperson candidates in all 21 LGAs in the state is to achieve a better balance of women in elected positions. He added that the PDP's candidates in the forthcoming local government polls are predominantly women and youth.
While calling on party faithful to work towards the party's victory, the Governor acknowledged the sacrifices made by PDP members in the state, from those in the national and state assemblies and party executives to grassroots members.
Governor Fintiri reassured them that he would do more for the state for the betterment of the citizenry. He disclosed that once organised labour finishes negotiating the national minimum wage, his government will embark on a massive employment programme, something never done before in the state. He announced his government's continued programme of empowering ten thousand youths and women with ₦50,000 every quarter to start businesses.
He therefore called on the electorate to vote for all PDP candidates in the Saturday polls.
The Adamawa State Chairman of the People's Democratic Party, Barr A.T. Shehu, described Numan and Demsa as a stronghold for the PDP while presenting the party's flags to its chairmanship candidate in Numan LGA, Hon. Innocent Koto, and his counterpart from Demsa, Chief Akham Jalo Sanda.
The Member representing Demsa, Lamurde and Numan Federal Constituency, the Member Representing Numan Constituency in the State Assembly, and other speakers canvassed their support for their candidates and praised the achievements of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri under the PDP in the state.
Similarly, in Demsa LGA, the Member Representing Demsa Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Kate Mamuno, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Hon. James Iliya, and others reaffirmed their support for all the PDP's candidates.
The Numan LGA PDP candidate, Hon. Innocent Koto, and his counterpart from Demsa LGA, Chief Akham Jalo Sanda, assured the electorate that they would not betray the mandate given to them and would work tirelessly for the development of their respective Local Government Areas.
