A police Sergeant, Linus Wadzani, is in custody following the alleged shooting of his own father in Maiduguri on Sunday.
The incident, confirmed by Borno State Police Command spokesperson Kenneth Daso at a press briefing today, occurred in the Tudun Wada neighbourhood, close to the state police headquarters.
Daso revealed that Wadzani, a member of Mobile Police unit 6 and assigned security detail at the Borno State House of Assembly, arrived home around 4:30 pm on Sunday and became embroiled in a heated argument with his father, a retired Assistant Superintendent with the mounted police unit.
According to Daso's account, the argument tragically escalated, with Wadzani allegedly discharging his service AK-47 rifle multiple times and killed his father, Wadzani Natsiri.
Family members present at the residence upon police arrival reported that Sergeant Wadzani was the only other person present during the altercation, leaving a lack of eyewitnesses to the precise details of the confrontation.
Daso confirmed that a police patrol team swiftly responded to a distress call and secured the scene.
During questioning, Sergeant Wadzani reportedly admitted to consuming alcohol and narcotics prior to the incident.
A forensic team has been tasked with collecting blood samples from the sergeant to determine his mental state at the time of the shooting. A full investigation into the homicide has been launched.
