A late, looping free-kick from Alexia Putellas secured Spain a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nigeria, propelling them into the women’s football quarter-finals at Paris 2024.
La Roja struggled to break down their Group C opponents, with Salma Paralluelo’s second-half effort incorrectly ruled out for offside. Despite numerous close calls for both sides, including a goal-line clearance for Putellas, the game appeared destined for a stalemate. However, a careless foul gifted Spain a free-kick on the edge of the area, which Putellas expertly curled over the Nigerian goalkeeper to snatch a dramatic win.
With the three points, Spain topped Group C and secured their place in the knockout stages ahead of their final group match against Brazil. Nigeria, on the other hand, face a daunting task to progress, requiring a victory over Japan in their final game.
The Super Falcons showed flashes of brilliance on the counter-attack, with Esther Okoronkwo forcing a fine save from the Spanish goalkeeper. Yet, it was the world number one side who dominated possession and created the better opportunities. Aitana Bonmati, Putellas, and Paralluelo all came close to breaking the deadlock, with the latter spurning a golden chance to open the scoring.
Putellas’ goal, which arrived with just five minutes remaining, proved to be the difference between the two sides. Spain will now look to build on their momentum against Brazil, while Nigeria must regroup and find a way to upset Japan.
