The Adamawa State Executive Council has approved over nineteen billion naira for the construction of a new Jimeta Shopping Mall in the state capital.
The former Jimeta Modern market which was demolished recently by Governor Fintiri was built by Military administration in 1996.
The approval was given at the weekly EXCO meeting on Wednesday, chaired by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri at the Council Chambers in Government House Yola.
Briefing journalists shortly after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon. James Iliya, said that the approval for the construction of the Jimeta Modern Mall was granted to align with the urban renewal programme of the Governor Fintiri-led administration. This is aimed at boosting micro and small businesses, stimulating economic growth, attracting investors to the state, and enhancing the state's visual appeal.
He revealed that the 12th EXCO meeting of the year approved the sum of ₦19,700,382,063.40 for the construction of the shopping mall.
The Commissioner explained that the contract for the construction of the shopping mall was divided into three lots and awarded to three different contractors: Madugu Construction Commercial Company, Lubel Nigeria Ltd, and Amija Nigeria Limited. The contract will be completed within 20 months.
Contributing, the Commissioner for Commerce, Trade, and Industry, Hon. Ishaya Dabari, disclosed that the shopping mall will be a three-block, two-story building with a fire station, administrative block, clinic, police station, church, and mosque.
Addressing the issue of flooding in some parts of the state, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Sadiq Mohammed, stated that the EXCO had discussed the devastating effects of flooding and urged residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer places. He also announced the end-of-month sanitation exercise in the state, calling on all citizens to comply with the order. He warned that violators would face prosecution.
In addition, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Hon. Felix Tangwami, urged residents of the state, especially those affected by flooding, to report any unusual diseases to the Ministry's Surveillance Officers or any nearby health centre. He advised people to avoid self-medication and maintain good hygiene, particularly those taking refuge in designated flood victim centres.
