Court Blocks Bid to Silence Nigerian Protests #EndBadGovernance protests

By Barnabas Augustine
A last-ditch attempt to quell the mounting unrest sweeping Nigeria has been thwarted today as a High Court judge dismissed a bid to halt the #EndBadGovernance protests.

In a swift legal manoeuvre, a group led by its layer, Barr. Tsembelee Sorkaa sought an injunction to silence the growing chorus of dissent against President Bola Tinubu's administration. Their argument centred on claims that the demonstrations were infringing on their fundamental rights.

The applicants sued the following organizations and individuals:

1st to 8th Respondents:

Active Citizens Group
Citizens For Change Advocacy Initiative
Concerned Nigerians
Human Rights Co-advocacy Initiative
Initiative For Change
Nigerians Against Hunger
Nigerian Against Corruption Initiative
Take It Back Movement
9th to 19th Respondents:

Our Future In Our Hands Initiative
Refurbished Nigeria
Save Nigeria Movement
Social Democratic Party (SDP)
Students For Change
Total Intervention
Tomorrow Today
We Coalition
Youths Against Tyranny
Additional Respondents:

Omoyele Sowore
The Attorney General of the Federation
Security agencies
However, Justice Peter Lifu was unconvinced by the hastily assembled case, dismissing the application outright due to a lack of supporting evidence.

The protests, which have seen tens of thousands take to the streets in recent days, have been sparked by a combination of economic hardship, rising fuel costs, and disillusionment with the government. Campaigners have vowed to step up their actions if the president fails to address their demands.

With the legal challenge rebuffed, the focus now returns to the streets as protesters prepare for an even larger mobilisation in the coming weeks.
