A former aide to the ex-Governor of Sokoto State, Shafi'u Tureta, has been remanded in custody pending a bail hearing. Tureta was charged with spreading harmful content against the current Governor, Ahmad Aliyu.
The allegations against Tureta stem from his sharing of videos and documents online. The videos showed the Governor's wife, Fatima Aliyu, flaunting wealth during her birthday celebration, while many citizens struggle with poverty. The document allegedly revealed the Governor's failure to pass his Senior Secondary School exams.
Tureta appeared before a magistrate court on Monday, where journalists were barred from attending.
His lawyer, Al'Mustafa Abubakar, said Tureta denied the charges and requested bail.
The court adjourned the bail hearing until September 6th and ordered Tureta's detention.
