Kaduna State has been gripped by unrest following a deadly clash between security forces and demonstrators. The turmoil erupted on Monday when protests against economic hardship and governance descended into chaos, with rioters looting businesses and clashing with authorities.
The situation escalated dramatically on Tuesday when a 16-year-old boy, Ismail Muhammad, was tragically killed during a military operation in the Samaru district of Zaria. The teenager was shot dead while in his father's residence.
In a statement, the military spokesperson, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed that a soldier opened fire to disperse the crowd. Regrettably, a stray bullet claimed the life of 16-year-old Isma’il Muhammad. The soldier responsible has been detained and is currently assisting with inquiries.
The Army’s top brass has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic incident. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of the Army Staff, has dispatched a senior military delegation to offer condolences to the bereaved family. The team, headed by Major General Lander Saraso, commander of the One Division, will visit the family to provide support during this difficult time.
The state government has imposed a curfew across Kaduna and Zaria in an attempt to quell the violence. Schools, shops, and markets have been shuttered, and a sense of fear has gripped the region.
Amidst the turmoil, there have been reports of demonstrators displaying the Russian flag, sparking speculation about potential foreign influence. However, the veracity of these claims remains unconfirmed.
As the situation continues to unfold, concerns are mounting over the potential for further bloodshed and the ability of authorities to restore order.
