The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has announced plans to rebuild a vital bridge in Madagali connecting Adamawa and Borno States. The bridge, which collapsed following heavy rainfall on July 11, has left the Madagali community facing significant hardship and economic loss.
NEDC Managing Director Mohammed Alkali Goni expressed sympathy for the affected residents and confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorized immediate reconstruction efforts. Goni visited the site to assess the damage and assure the community of the government's support.
In addition to the bridge, the commission plans to address other infrastructure issues, including culverts, to prevent future flooding and loss of life. Goni also inspected the Wotto bridge, which has been damaged by erosion, and pledged to provide a long-term solution.
Local residents described the devastating impact of the bridge collapse, highlighting disruptions to daily life, agricultural activities, and travel. They urged the government to prioritize the reconstruction project.
While facing challenges, some community members have found ways to adapt to the situation, utilizing the flood-affected areas for small-scale economic activities.
Recalled that on July 12, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State visited the collapsed Wagga bridge in Madagali and assured that he would liaise with the NEDC for immediate action to rehabilitate the bridge.
