Ukrainian forces have dealt a significant blow to Moscow’s war effort with the demolition of a vital bridge across the Seym River in Russia’s Kursk region. This strategic strike, part of Kyiv’s deepening incursion into Russian territory, has isolated a section of the borderland and disrupted vital supply lines for Kremlin troops.
As the conflict enters its second fortnight, Ukrainian troops have pressed further into Russia than at any point since the invasion began over two years ago. President Zelensky has framed the occupied territories as bargaining chips, suggesting they could be exchanged for Ukrainian lands currently under Moscow’s control.
Despite making territorial gains, Kyiv insists its ambition lies in compelling Russia to the negotiating table, rather than seizing Russian land. A senior presidential aide emphasised Ukraine’s desire for Moscow to agree to peace terms dictated by Kyiv.
However, while Ukrainian forces have enjoyed some successes, the conflict remains a two-front war. Russian troops have made advances in eastern Ukraine, capturing Serhiivka and edging closer to the strategic city of Pokrovsk.
The escalating hostilities have triggered a humanitarian crisis, with over 120,000 people fleeing their homes. The situation is further compounded by Russia’s decision to evacuate civilians from border villages amid fears of intensified fighting.
Both sides have inflicted civilian casualties. A shopping centre in Donetsk was struck, injuring several people, while Ukrainian strikes on Crimea’s crucial Kerch Bridge were intercepted.
As the conflict deepens, the world watches with trepidation as the potential for further escalation looms large.
