Adamawa State has taken a decisive stance against scavenging, with Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri introducing a blanket ban on the practice.
The governor signed an executive order on Wednesday, 14th August 2024, which prohibits scavenging across all 21 local government areas of the state.
This was contained in a press statement signed by Mr Humwashi Wonosikou the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
The order defines scavenging as "the act of rummaging through waste or engaging in any activity that constitutes a nuisance or health hazard".
The statement said, those found to be in breach of the law will face arrest and prosecution.
Security forces in the state have been granted the authority to search for and apprehend individuals involved in scavenging activities. Furthermore, anyone attempting to obstruct the enforcement of the order will be prosecuted under the provisions of the Nigerian constitution and the Adamawa State Penal Code.
Offenders face a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment, a N100,000 fine, or both.
Mr Humwashi Wonosikou said that Governor Fintiri emphasised the government's commitment to public health and safety, stating: “This Executive Order serves as a strong warning to all scavengers and those who engage in such activities. The Adamawa State Government will not tolerate any actions that compromise the health, safety, and well-being of its citizens; violators will be dealt with swiftly and decisively. We urge all citizens to cooperate with the government in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.”
