A tragic incident unfolded in the Sokoto State village of Kaurar Wanke in Shagari Local Government Area on Thursday, resulting in the untimely deaths of five individuals.
The family members succumbed to poisoning after consuming a soup made with fertilizer, which was mistakenly believed to be monosodium glutamate seasoning popularly known as Farin Maggi in Hausa Language.
The incident occurred in Shagari Local Government Area, and the victims tragically passed away over the course of several days. Three fatalities were reported on Friday, followed by two more on Sunday, including one in the presence of the state's Health Commissioner, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe.
Two additional victims are currently receiving treatment at Sokoto Specialist Hospital.
Commissioner Balarabe urged residents to store poisonous and chemical substances away from food preparation areas, especially where children might have access.
A relative of the victims, Muhammad Abdullahi, expressed gratitude for the commissioner's prompt response and support. He commended her efforts in providing assistance both at the village and the hospital.
The Chief Medical Director of Sokoto Specialist Hospital, Dr. Attahiru Sokoto, described the incident as a devastating tragedy.
