Adamawa Health Commissioner Confirms 12 Deaths in Cholera Epidemic

The Adamawa State government has officially declared a cholera outbreak, with 12 fatalities reported to date. The Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Chief Felix B Tangwami, made the announcement during a press briefing on Sunday, September 22nd, 2024.

Tangwami revealed that 90 samples were tested using rapid diagnostic tests, with 58 returning positive results. Of those positive samples, 50 were cultured and sent to the National Reference Laboratory for further verification. Thirty-eight PCR results have been received, with 30 confirmed as Vibrio cholerae, the bacteria responsible for cholera.

According to report from the state Ministry of Health, as of September 21st, 2024, there have been 312 cumulative cases of cholera in Adamawa State, including 23 new suspected cases reported in the past day. The case fatality rate stands at 3.8%.

Four local government areas (LGAs) are currently affected by the outbreak: Fufore, Girei, Yola-North, and Yola-South. The commissioner emphasized the need for swift action from all stakeholders, including government agencies, partners, and the media, to contain the epidemic.

The Adamawa State government has provided medical supplies to the Infectious Disease Center to support case management. Additionally, nine oral rehydration points (ORPs) have been established in affected communities to provide treatment to patients.
