The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has categorically denied reports that embattled former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is currently in its custody.
The anti-graft agency issued a statement on Wednesday, dismissing the claims as "incorrect" and reiterating that Bello remains a wanted man for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges.
The EFCC's stance contradicts a previous statement from Bello's Media Office, which had claimed that the former governor had honored an invitation from the agency. In a subsequent statement, the Media Office maintained that Bello had indeed appeared at the EFCC office but was asked to leave without interrogation.
The matter has been a source of contention between Bello and the EFCC. In April, the agency declared Bello wanted for the alleged financial crimes and had attempted to arrest him at his residence in Abuja. However, the former governor was reportedly whisked away by his successor, Usman Ododo.
Despite numerous adjournments, Bello has yet to appear before the trial judge in the case. His absence has raised concerns about the progress of the legal proceedings against him.
