A senior figure within Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been apprehended by the country's security services.
Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), was detained on Monday as he was preparing to board a flight to the United Kingdom for a trade union conference. The arrest took place at Abuja's Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Head of Information of the NLC, Mr Benson Upah, confirmed the incident and expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding Ajaero's detention.
The NLC stated that they were unaware of the reasons for his arrest and had only received a brief message from him indicating that he was being held by state security agents.
Ajaero's arrest comes just a week after he appeared before police investigators in response to an earlier invitation. While he was released the following day, the recent detention has raised questions about the government's intentions.
The NLC has been vocal in its criticism of the government's policies and has organized several protests in recent months. Some have speculated that the arrest of Ajaero may be related to these activities.
